FARMŸNG
FlAgship demonstration of industrial scale production of nutrient Resources from Mealworms to develop a bioeconomY New Generation
The european FARMŸNG project, co-funded under the H2020 BBI JU 2018 call, will demonstrate a large-scale, the first-of-its-kind bio-based value chain producing sustainable, safe and premium feed products for petfood and fishfeed markets from an innovative origin: the Tenebrio molitor insect (mealworm).
Coordinator: Ÿnsect
Funding: € 19 630 000 (H2020 – BBI JU)
Period: 2019-2022
Objectives:
To build a fully automated industrial vertical plant for insect-ingredients production, called ΫnFarmTM, able to produce 20 000 tons of proteins per year
To demonstrate at large scale a first-of-its-kind bio-based value chain producing a wide range of sustainable products from insects: protein meal, oil and organic fertilizer
To satisfy fish-feed, pet food and fertilizer markets demand, demonstrating the quality, purity and safety of the end-products in full conformity with the EU regulations
To ensure the sustainability of the Industrial Plant the FARMŸNG project will taking into account environmental, social and economic dimensions to determine the impacts of the whole process, from the feedstock supply to the final products
Expected impacts:
Social
To offer a successful and inspirational Flagship example for European’s bio-based economy, demonstrating the techno-economic viability of the first full-scale industrial plant for the production of sustainable and alternative-sourced proteins
To establish new bio-based value chains from agriculture by-products to the production of fish feed and pet food products and, in parallel, to valorise insect manure the organic fertilizer production
To develop new consumer products, based on insect proteins, for pet food and fish feed applications, that fully meet market requirements
Environmental
To drastically reduce the carbon footprint greenhouse gas (GHG) and NH3 emissions associated to the the production of animal proteins
To avoid 800 000 tons of fresh fish catch per year, by partly replacing fish meal with the use of mealworm meal for animal feed purpose
Economic
To generate around €1 billion of revenues, creating then also significant financial value for the European Member States
To create more than 1200 total new direct and indirect jobs along the new value chains
FARMYNG brings together 20 European partners:
